624 South Palm Avenue is situated on the southern most waterfront lot within the original town plat of Sarasota, drafted in the 1880’s by the Florida Mortgage and Investment Company. The lot is described as Lot 26, Block E. After passing through a number of short-term ownership’s in 1911, this lot was purchased by Carl C. Thompson.
Carl Thompson was the son of Dr. Ebenezer Thompson, a well-known figure in Sarasota’s early history. Dr. Thompson and his family moved to Sarasota in 1904. He was an early minister of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.
Carl Thompson was the manager of the Thompson Brothers Wholesale Fish Dealers Company. This company was located on a railroad dock, which jutted into Sarasota Bay at Strawberry Avenue. In 1912 Carl Thompson sold 624 South Palm Avenue to his Father, Dr. Ebenezer Thompson.
The first home on this property was likely built for Dr. Thompson by Carl Thompson, his son, who was a contractor. In 1916 Dr. Thompson managed several properties occupied by winter visitors. These properties were in Grosvner park, which he developed with J.B. Chapline, it was located between Palm Avenue and Orange Avenue. |
