     Historical Narrative for 624 South Palm Avenue

     624 South Palm Avenue is situated on the southern most waterfront lot within the original town plat of Sarasota, drafted in the 1880’s by the Florida Mortgage and Investment Company. The lot is described as Lot 26, Block E. After passing through a number of short-term ownership’s in 1911, this lot was purchased by Carl C. Thompson.
     Carl Thompson was the son of Dr. Ebenezer Thompson, a well-known figure in Sarasota’s early history. Dr. Thompson and his family moved to Sarasota in 1904. He was an early minister of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.
     Carl Thompson was the manager of the Thompson Brothers Wholesale Fish Dealers Company. This company was located on a railroad dock, which jutted into Sarasota Bay at Strawberry Avenue. In 1912 Carl Thompson sold 624 South Palm Avenue to his Father, Dr. Ebenezer Thompson.
     The first home on this property was likely built for Dr. Thompson by Carl Thompson, his son, who was a contractor. In 1916 Dr. Thompson managed several properties occupied by winter visitors. These properties were in Grosvner park, which he developed with J.B. Chapline, it was located between Palm Avenue and Orange Avenue.

     The current residence at 624 South Palm Avenue was built in the early 1920’s. It was built on the southeast corner of the property occupied by the former Thompson residence, which was occupied by Mrs. W.Y. Perry, in the early 1920’s.
     Mrs. W. Y. Perry was a local civic leader and wife of the Sarasota County’s first county judge. Mrs. Perry was instrumental in the establishment of the Newtown Day Nursery; she served as President of the Sarasota Hospital Guild and was active in the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.
     In April of 1925 Mrs. Perry subdivided the property of the old Thompson Residence and the home at 624 South Palm Avenue. Mrs. Perry lived at 624 South Palm Avenue until the late 1930’s, since that date the home was occupied by county Judge Paul Albritton and then Mrs. Owen Burns.
     The “Perry Residence”, at 624 South Palm Avenue possesses many architectural features, which are of note for their style and craftsmanship. The structure is associated with families important in the development of Sarasota. The structure is a of a scale and proportion that enhances the pedestrian aspect of Palm Avenue, which is historical times was lined with large homes. 624 South Palm Avenue was not identified in the 1977 Sarasota Historic and Architectural Survey. Based on these considerations of the architectural merit, historical association and contribution the urban setting the structure has since been designated a historic property.
